Programs and Schedules
Structure of the School Day and Daily Schedules:The school is composed of a pre-K and Kindergarten program, the elementary grades which encompass grades 1-5, and the middle school which comprises grades 6-8.
The schedules vary slightly throughout the day for each of these divisions.
All students meet in a general assembly each morning when they get off the bus.
Opening prayers, daily reading, announcements, and the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag are accomplished during this time. All students assemble again at the end of the instructional day for closing prayers and dismissal as car riders or to the buses.
There is a scheduled morning snack and recess period for grades pre-K to 5. The middle grades have a short snack break in the morning.
A combined lunch and recess period occurs midday for 45 minutes.
The current enrollment gives SMS an average student to teacher ratio of about 15:1 in grades 1-8.
Pre-K and Kindergarten have full time aides in addition to the full time teacher.
Special subjects include Physical Education, Art, Music, Information Technology, and Spanish.
All grades from K to 8 have one instructional period per week in each, with these additions:
8th graders have five periods per week of Spanish and 5th graders have two periods per week of Inforrmation Technology.
There are also pullouts during the year for special activities related to some special subjects. For instance there will be additional music classes in preparation for performances or extra PE classes to prepare for the special events. Band classes are held one morning per week.
Students in grades 5 to 8 are able to participate in the Catholic Schools Sunday league basketball program. Instructed and supervised by adult coaches, girls and boys practice and compete against other Catholic schools in the area. There is a $15 fee per student.
Once a student reaches fourth grade he or she may choose to become part of the junior band program. This is a special program, taught by an independent instrumental teacher. Practices are held once a week and with dedication and practice students are able to move up into advance band. This program is administered by the Archdiocese and charges an annual fee of $600 to cover the cost of instruction. Families rent or purchase instruments.
Saint Michael's co-ed volleyball team will be entering its' second year where we will be joining other catholic schools in volleyball competition. Any interested student in grades 5-8 is encouraged to join the team. Practices will begin after the basketball season ends. There is no cost to play and we encourage those with no experience to come out and play a fun and exciting sport! If you have any questions, please contact Miss Crisci or Mr. McQuilkin. Throughout the year SMS students participate, and many times take top honors, in contests that range from drawing to speaking to writing and spelling. Students are encouraged to participate in contests like the "Keep Christ in Christmas" poster competition, the county fair speech contest, the local spelling bee, the National Geography Bee, and the American Legion essay competition, just to name a few.
Each year our eighth grade students are given the opportunity to work with, the adult Lion’s Club members who provide a variety of services for the local community. Students participate in a number of activities focusing on service to others while still enjoying the companionship of peers and adults.
Middle school students who are interested in leading the singing for weekly masses may join the school chorus.
